Embodiment Construction

[0045] Now refer to the attached figure 1 In the inkjet printer shown, ink is delivered under pressure from an ink supply system 10 to a printhead 11 via a flexible tube (which is bundled with other fluid tubes and electrical wires (not shown) into what is known in the industry as an "umbilical" conduit 12). , and returns. The ink supply system 10 is arranged in a cabinet 13, which is usually mounted on a desk, and the printhead 11 is arranged outside the cabinet. When working, the ink is sucked from the liquid reservoir of the ink 14 into the mixing tank 15 through the system pump 16, and the mixing tank 15 is filled with ink and supplemented solvent from replaceable ink cartridges and solvent cartridges 17, 18 as required. As described below, ink is delivered under pressure from ink tank 17 to mixing tank 15 as needed, and solvent is drawn from solvent tank 18 by suction pressure.

[0046] As will be understood from the following description, the ink supply system 10 and t...

Abstract

An ink supply system for an ink jet printer, particularly a continuous ink jet printer, has a docking station where one of more disposable cartridges of ink or solvent are releasably connectable to the printer. The cartridge comprises an inner collapsible container with an outlet that is connectable to an inlet of the ink supply system and a substantially rigid outer housing. A front wall of the housing has an opening providing access to the outlet and a window that provides access to electrical contacts (92) associated with a memory device containing information relating to the contents of the cartridge. The contacts in a fixed relationship relative to the outlet so that when the cartridge is docked to establish fluid communication with the ink supply system the electrical contacts are electrically connected to respective contacts associated with the printer.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to inkjet printing and in particular to fluid supply cartridges for inkjet printers such as continuous inkjet printers. Background technique [0002] In inkjet printing systems, a print consists of individual ink droplets produced at a nozzle and expelled toward a substrate. There are two broad classes of systems: drop-on-demand systems, which produce ink droplets for printing when needed; and continuous inkjet printing systems, which continuously produce ink droplets, but only selected ones are directed toward the substrate while others The ink droplets are recycled to the ink supply. [0003] Continuous inkjet printers supply pressurized ink to a printhead drop generator where a continuous stream of ink exiting a nozzle is broken up into individual regular droplets by, for example, an oscillating piezoelectric device. The droplets are directed past charging electrodes where they are each selectively given a predetermin...
