When the electrochemical cell 1 is subjected to high temperature and a potential is applied to the opposing surfaces of the electrolyte layer 10, oxygen ions will conduct through the electrolyte to produce oxygen permeation or permeation. Thus, as is well known in the art, the electrochemical cell will be located in an insulating enclosure in which the electrochemical cell 1 will be heated and will be fed with an oxygen-containing stream 14 , and will discharge an oxygen permeate stream 16 from the electrochemical cell 1 .
