[0020] The present teachings can provide electrochemical cells with improved power and voltage performance and fuel utilization without increasing the external dimensions of the electrochemical cells. For example, the present teachings include tubular electrochemical cells having an internal structure exhibiting a Fermat spiral. In an embodiment, the internal structure is a substantially planar multilayer member (comprising cathode, anode and electrolyte) exhibiting the shape of a closed Fermat spiral such that fuel and oxidant channels are formed on either side of the multilayer member. The present teachings can be used to design electrochemical cells with higher volumetric power densities than prior art tubular electrochemical cells having the same external dimensions.
