Methods, apparatuses and systems directed to improving the efficiency of bandwidth allocation schemes by adapting to slow-start mechanisms associated with network communications protocols, such as the TCP / IP protocol suite. In one implementation, the present invention scales down the initial target rate assigned to a data flow to a fraction of an initial estimate of the effective rate capacity of the communications path between two hosts. As packets are received, the target rate is gradually increased, eventually up to the detected rate capacity of the communications path. Implementations of the present invention improve the efficiency of bandwidth allocation by reducing the over-allocation of bandwidth to data flows during the slow-start phase, leaving more bandwidth available to other data flows.

The fast dynamic measurement of bandwidth in a TCP network environment utilizes a single pair of packets to calculate bandwidth between two entities on a network (such as the Internet). This calculation is based upon the packet-pair technique. This bandwidth measurement is extremely quick. On its journey across a network, communication devices may delay the packet pairs. In particular, TCP networks have two algorithms designed to delay some packets with the goal of increasing the overall throughput of the network. However, these algorithms effectively delay a packet pair designed to measure bandwidth. Therefore, they distort the measurement. These algorithms are Nagle and Slow Start. The fast dynamic measurement of bandwidth implements countermeasures to overcome the delays imposed by these algorithms. Such countermeasures include disabling the application of the Nagle Algorithm; minimizing the buffering of packets by sending a “push” packet right after the packet pair; and avoiding the Slow Start Algorithm by priming it with a dummy packet.

A system and method for efficiently forwarding client requests from a proxy server in a TCP / IP computing environment is described. A plurality of transient requests are received from individual sending clients into a request queue. Each request is commonly addressed to an origin server. Time estimates of TCP overhead, slow start overhead, time-to-idle, and request transfer time for sending the requests over each of a plurality of managed connections to the origin server are dynamically calculated, concurrent to receiving and during processing of each request. The managed connection is chosen from, in order of preferred selection, a warm idle connection, an active connection with a time-to-idle less than a slow start overhead, a cold idle connection, an active connection with a time-to-idle less than a TCP overhead, a new managed connection, and an existing managed connection with a smallest time-to-idle. Each request is forwarded to the origin server over the selected managed connection.

Methods and apparatus are described for intelligently assigning a portion of a cluster's traffic (e.g., buckets) to a cache system to minimize overloading of such cache system. In general terms, when a new cache system enters a cache cluster and / or starts up, the new cache system's full bucket allocation is not immediately assigned to the new cache system. Instead, only a portion of the full bucket allocation is initially assigned to the new cache system. In one embodiment, the new cache system's bucket assignment is gradually increased until the cache system is handling it's full bucket allocation or it becomes overloaded. The cache system's load is also checked periodically to determine whether it has become overloaded. When the cache system becomes overloaded, buckets are immediately shed from the cache system. In sum, the new cache system's load is adjusted until it is handling an optimum number of buckets.

An embodiment of a system and method that uses inline measurements to probe available bandwidth for a transmission control protocol, and adaptively sets a slow-start threshold according to the available bandwidth. The method includes initializing a congestion window “cwnd,” sending cwnd packets, estimating an available bandwidth for the cwnd packets. The congestion window cwnd is set to a higher number, and the higher number of further packets is sent if the available bandwidth is greater than a first threshold level. The available bandwidth is re-estimated for the higher number of the further packets, and a soft start threshold “ssthresh” is set to the re-estimated available bandwidth. A statistical measure is calculated for the re-estimated available bandwidth, and the congestion window cwnd is set equal to ssthresh if a ratio of the statistical measure to the re-estimated available bandwidth is less than a second threshold level.

The disclosed approach serves to overcome the latency related to the “slow-start restart” by assessing network conditions and avoiding the “slow-start restart” when network conditions justify the avoidance. The disclosed methods, applications and devices implement the periodic communication of a probe packet that is generated and transmitted from a TCP sender to a TCP receiver during the period that the TCP network connection remains idle. Receipt of the probe packet by the TCP receiver will trigger transmission of an acknowledgment message by the TCP receiver. Upon receipt of the acknowledgement message the TCP sender will restart measurement of the idleness period and, as such the “slow-start restart” is avoided.

Detecting an elephant flow based on the size of a packet

Some embodiments provide a forwarding element that inspects the size of each of several packets in a data flow to determine whether the data flow is an elephant flow. The forwarding element inspects the size because, in order for the packet to be of a certain size, the data flow had to already have gone through a slow start in which smaller packets are transferred and by definition be an elephant flow. When the forwarding element receives a packet in a data flow, the forwarding element identifies the size of the packet. The forwarding element then determines if the size of the packet is greater than a threshold size.
