Bandwidth Measurement

Methods for testing network bandwidth availability in a non-intrusive manner. By implementing occasional, base-line bandwidth testing, a more accurate indication of actual transfer rate results. When an application dependent upon network bandwidth is first executed, a series of file transfers takes place utilizing a series of different sized pieces of content.

Fast dynamic measurement of bandwidth in a TCP network environment

The fast dynamic measurement of bandwidth in a TCP network environment utilizes a single pair of packets to calculate bandwidth between two entities on a network (such as the Internet). This calculation is based upon the packet-pair technique. This bandwidth measurement is extremely quick. On its journey across a network, communication devices may delay the packet pairs. In particular, TCP networks have two algorithms designed to delay some packets with the goal of increasing the overall throughput of the network. However, these algorithms effectively delay a packet pair designed to measure bandwidth. Therefore, they distort the measurement. These algorithms are Nagle and Slow Start. The fast dynamic measurement of bandwidth implements countermeasures to overcome the delays imposed by these algorithms. Such countermeasures include disabling the application of the Nagle Algorithm; minimizing the buffering of packets by sending a “push” packet right after the packet pair; and avoiding the Slow Start Algorithm by priming it with a dummy packet.

Staged, slowly-started transmission control method based on measurement of network state

Via real time online bandwidth measurement, this method confirms the threshold value ssthresh. When the congestion window (CW) is less than a half of the threshold, the rule of exponent gain is followed. Otherwise CW gains each time a value of a half of difference of the threshold and CW (ssthresh-cwnd) to approach gradually the threshold. Until the difference is less than the regulation factor phi (ssthresh / 2>= phi >=2). Then CW is set as the threshold value to enter the stage of avoiding congestion. This invention can reduce the happening of loss of several texts in a window at the slowly start stage, reduce the package loss rate and raise the net transferring ability.

Data replication with dynamic compression

A method for replicating data between two or more network connected data storage devices, the method including dynamically determining whether to compress data prior to transmitting across the network based, at least in part, on bandwidth throughput between the network connected data storage devices. If it has been determined to compress the data, the method involves compressing the data and transmitting the compressed data over the network. If it has been determined not to compress the data, the method involves transmitting the data, uncompressed, over the network. Dynamically determining whether to compress data may include comparing bandwidth measurements with a predetermined policy defining when compression should be utilized. In some embodiments, the policy may define that compression should be utilized when an estimated time for compressing the data and transmitting the compressed data is less than an estimated time for transmitting the data uncompressed.

Midstream Determination of Varying Bandwidth Availability

Systems and methods for midstream determination of varying available bandwidth for streaming content between two network entities are described. During content streaming, a client requests a server to surge the content transmission rate. One or more bandwidth measurements are taken during the surge to determine if the increased transmission rate can be adequately managed. If the increased transmission rate can be adequately managed, the client may request the server to transmit remaining content at a transmission rate that is not greater than the increased, or surged, transmission rate. In a multi-bitrate file scenario, the surge rate may be higher than the rate of the fastest useable stream. In such a case, the fastest useable stream is selected. If the increased transmission rate is not suitable for future transmission, then the rate may remain at the original transmission rate.

High-efficiency single-end available bandwidth measuring method

The invention relates to a high-efficiency single-end available bandwidth measuring method (pathpider) which comprises the following steps: a transmitting end transmits a specific probe packet train to a destination node; the transmitting end calculates a series of round trip time delay (RTT) values in accordance with a series of ICMP (Internet Control Message Protocol) packets returned by the destination node, and determines the time when the round trip time delay starts to remain constant; and the transmitting end calculates the average transmission rate of the packet train within the time period from the time when the packet train starts to be transmitted to the time when the round trip time delay starts to remain constant, and uses the average transmission rate as the measured value of the available bandwidth of the path. The invention can realize single-end available bandwidth measurement based on the novel probe packet train, and the available bandwidth value can be measured by only transmitting the probe packet train once. Thus, the invention has the advantages of high measurement accuracy, high convergence speed, low invasion degree and high robustness.

Methods and systems for bandwidth measurement techniques

The present invention relates to systems, apparatus, and methods of measuring bandwidth of a network connection. The method includes establishing a network connection between a sending terminal and a receiving terminal. The method further includes inserting a flag into a packet header for a packet. The flag is to indicate to the receiving terminal that a bandwidth measurement is in progress. The packet also includes a payload. The method further includes setting the flag in the packets header of the packet to true, and transmitting to the receiving terminal the packet. The method then sums arrival times of the packet and the payload for the packet, and calculates the bandwidth measurement of the network connection by dividing the summed payload value by the summed arrival times value.

Using an SDN controller to automatically test cloud performance

A method and associated systems for using a software-defined network (SDN) controller to automatically test cloud performance. A bandwidth measuring and optimizing system associated with the SDN controller detects a triggering condition and, in response, directs a network-management tool to measure a bandwidth of a segment of a physical infrastructure of a network and directs the SDN controller to provision a virtual machine that then measures a bandwidth of a corresponding segment of virtual infrastructure that is overlaid upon the physical segment. In some embodiments, these two tests are synchronized so as to concurrently measure physical and virtual bandwidths while the same test data passes through the virtual infrastructure segment. The measured bandwidth of the virtual segment is then compared to the measured bandwidth of the physical segment in order to determine an efficiency of the virtual network.

Bandwidth measurement method and apparatus

The invention provides a method and a device for measuring bandwidth, wherein the method comprises the following steps: step S1, initializing a line bandwidth value as a bandwidth default value; step S2, periodically detecting the interface flow rate and recording the peak value of the interface flow rate, wherein the peak value of the interface flow rate is the maximum value of the interface flow rate detected from the initialization to the current moment; and step S3, adjusting the line bandwidth value according to the bandwidth default value, the current line bandwidth value and the peak value of the interface flow rate. The method records the maximum value of the interface flow rate detected from the initialization to the current moment, namely the peak value of the interface flow rate, and adjusts the line bandwidth value according to the bandwidth default value, the current line bandwidth value and the peak value of the interface flow rate, thus the adjustment of the line bandwidth does not independently depend on the peak value of the interface flow rate so as to avoid the problem that the actual bandwidth of a line cannot be characterized correctly because the bandwidth control is turned on so that the interface flow is suppressed.
