Problems solved by technology

However, as in the case of high-volume water monitors, current manufacturing methods are limited to forming the monitor from metal and similarly require extensive machinery that can produce volumetric shapes and handle large-volume geometries for finishing (e.g., machining). The capital investment of the machinery, which typically includes casting patterns and core boxes, or mandrels for bending tubes

Embodiment Construction

[0031] refer to figure 1 , reference numeral 10 generally designates a mold arrangement for forming a core 12 for forming the fire fighting apparatus of the present invention. As will be described more fully below, the core may have one or more inserts added thereto or therein, the inserts being formed separately, such as by molding, casting, or by other forming methods, and then composited together with the core. Covering, the composite material is then combined with one or more inserts to form the body of the fire apparatus. In this way, the fire fighting device of the invention is formed of composite material with one or more inserts providing, for example, joints or waterway components.

[0032] Such as figure 1 As best seen in , the mold assembly 10 includes two mold halves 14 and 16 each having a cavity 18 configured to form one half of the waterway of the fire fighting apparatus ultimately formed by the core 12 . In the illustrated embodiment, the cavity 18 has a ge...

Abstract

A method of forming a fire fighting monitor includes forming a core in the shape of a non-linear waterway of a monitor body, applying a composite material over the core, and then curing the composite material to thereby form the fire fighting monitor body.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to firefighting equipment having waterways, and more particularly to firefighting monitors. Background technique [0002] Firefighting equipment, such as fire hose monitors, are often used in industrial or marine environments where large water sources and the potential for large-scale fires exist. Although in the past high flow monitors were limited to fixed mounting points, more new style fire trucks are using higher flow monitors. [0003] Typically, water monitors are constructed by making waterways out of welded and bent metal tubes or out of cast and machined metal bodies. Water monitors are constructed of aluminum, brass or steel. Due to the need for waterways, the resulting end product is very bulky, heavy and expensive to manufacture. The weight and size of these monitors created problems when fitted to conventional fire trucks. These constraints make it extremely difficult to use these monitors on pl...
