Embodiment Construction

[0034] Hereinafter, the present invention will be explained in more detail.

[0035] Preparation of adhesive layer

[0036] Hereinafter, one possible way for preparing the adhesive for the adhesive layer will be explained.

[0037] Polyurethane adhesives are typically prepared by reacting long-chain polyols with aromatic or aliphatic isocyanates using the diisocyanate polyaddition method. In the heat-activatable polyurethane adhesives, the polymer backbone is essentially based on crystalline polyester polyols, but amorphous polyester polyols have also been used to prepare heat-activatable adhesives (see figure 1 , which shows the raw materials used to prepare the polyurethane dispersion).

[0038] In the preparation of polyurethane dispersions by the acetone method or the melt dispersion method, emulsifiers which are incorporated into the polymer chains are used. Hydrophilic modification can be carried out by covalent bonding of ionic groups in the polymer chain or by lon...

Abstract

The invention relates to a label comprising a substrate having a face side and a rear side, and an adhesive layer arranged on the rear side of the substrate, the adhesive layer being non-tacky but activatable to become tacky. The adhesive layer comprises a polyurethane composition which is reversibly changeable from the non-tacky state to the tacky state. The invention also relates to a method for attaching the label to an item.

Description

field of invention [0001] The present invention relates to a label comprising a substrate having a front side and a back side and an adhesive layer disposed on the back side of the substrate, the adhesive layer being non-adhesive but activatable to become tacky. The invention also relates to a method for attaching the label to an object. Background of the invention [0002] A variety of known label decoration techniques are available, each of which has various advantages and disadvantages. [0003] Self-adhesive or pressure sensitive labels are well known and widely used in industry. However, it has several disadvantages, including the fact that the method of preparation is rather complicated. First, a release liner is coated on one side with a release agent (typically silicone), and then a layer of pressure-sensitive adhesive is applied on top of the cured silicone layer, which is applied over the entire surface of the product. Remains sticky anytime during lifetime. A ...
