Abstract

A supplemental control system for a materials handling vehicle (10) comprises one or more sensors (76) capable of defining multiple contactless detection zones (78a, 78b) at least towards the front of the forward travel direction of a remotely controlled vehicle. The vehicle responds to the detection of objects within the designated zones based upon predetermined actions, such as to slow down or stop the vehicle, and / or to take other action, such as to perform a steer angle correction.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to material handling vehicles, and more particularly, to systems and methods for integrating detection zone information into auxiliary wireless remote controls for materials handling vehicles. Background technique [0002] Low-level order forklifts are commonly used to pick inventory in warehouses and distribution centers. Such order-order forklifts typically include a load-carrying fork and a power unit with a platform on which an operator can walk and stand while controlling the forklift. The power unit may also have steerable wheels and corresponding traction and steering control mechanisms, such as movable steering arms coupled to the steerable wheels. A control handle attached to the steering arm typically includes the operating controls necessary to drive the forklift and operate its load handling features. [0003] In a typical inventory picking operation, an operator fills an order from available invent...
