Problems solved by technology

Unfortunately, during positive airway pressure therapy, the noise caused by these leaks may make it difficult for the subject to fall asleep and be awakened from sleep
In turn, awakenings may limit the efficacy of the treatment
In addition, the noise may affect the sleep of those around you

Embodiment Construction

[0013] The present invention advantageously utilizes the sound attenuation of adjacent chambers in gaseous communication, each chamber being defined by barrier means. The baffle means includes a baffle having an aperture defining a cross-sectional area. Preferably, the barrier has a plurality of small holes to assist in reducing noise caused by gas flow. More preferably, the holes are tapered. Each hole may be frusto-conical in shape. The barrier means may include a plurality of small tapered holes. Surprisingly, the multiple small tapered bores are less noisy than fewer, larger bores resulting in an equal total cross-sectional area. Compared with cylindrical holes, the noise of tapered or truncated cone holes can be reduced. The reduced noise enables more efficient sleep with fewer awakenings.

[0014] It is known in the art that for a sequential design of two holes, compared to a single hole design, with the same overall pressure drop at the same flow rate, two holes sh...

Abstract

The present invention provides a methods and apparatus for gas delivery, in particular, a mask including at least one porous barrier defining at least two chambers in gaseous communication. The porous barrier may include a plurality of pores, which preferably define a tapered shape. The mask may include a pliable nasal cushion. The invention provides a method for providing pressurised gas to a subject by supplying gas from a pressurised source to a mask, transmitting the gas into a first chamber at a first pressure, transmitting the gas into a second chamber at a second pressure through a plurality of pores, and transmitting the gas from the second chamber through a mask exit.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a mask for providing gas to a subject, and in particular, to a mask for delivering pressurized gas to the airway of a subject. Background technique [0002] There are a number of treatments that require the use of masks to deliver gas or air to a subject. For example, in the treatment of sleep apnea, continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) in which the gas is continuously supplied at a pressure above ambient or variable positive airway pressure in which the gas is supplied at a variable pressure is usually delivered via a face mask. (VPAP), or other methods such as BiPAP, in which gas is supplied at two pressures, or APAP, in which gas is supplied at a pressure automatically determined by the delivery system, to deliver gas to a sleeping subject to maintain the patient's airway Open for efficient respiration. Typically, gas must be delivered via the mask for prolonged periods of time, eg, overnight periods of sleep...
