Embodiment Construction

[0017] Embodiments set forth in this patent application document describe a system for measuring deflection of a wind turbine rotor shaft connecting a rotatable hub to a generator. The term "deflection" as used in this patent application document refers to the displacement of a structural member due to the application of one or more loads to the structural member. It has been determined that different rotor blades in a wind turbine may be subjected to different conditions of wind speed and / or wind direction. These conditions can cause bending moments to be applied to the rotor shaft and cause the rotor shaft to deflect.

[0018] In various embodiments described in this patent application, the measured deflection of the rotor shaft is used to determine the pitch angle of at least one rotor blade connected to the rotatable hub. The determined pitch angle reduces the magnitude of the rotor shaft deflection. To determine the deflection of the rotor shaft, the system uses a contr...

Abstract

The invention relates to a system and a method for measuring deflection of a shaft in a wind turbine and adjusting a pitch angle of a rotor blade in the wind turbine based on the determined deflection. The system includes an emitter, a receiver, and a controller. The emitter is positioned adjacent a first portion of the shaft and is configured to emit photons. The receiver is positioned adjacent a second portion of the shaft and is configured to receive photons emitted from the emitter and determine a location on the receiver where the photons strike the receiver. The controller is communicatively coupled to the receiver and is configured to determine deflection of the shaft based on the location on the receiver where the photons strike the receiver. The controller is also configured to adjust the pitch angle of the rotor blade based on the determined deflection of the shaft to reduce deflection of the shaft.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to wind turbines, and more particularly to a system for determining the deflection of a wind turbine shaft. Background technique [0002] Known wind turbines convert the kinetic energy of the wind into electrical energy. A wind turbine consists of one or more blades attached to a rotatable hub that rotates when oncoming wind strikes the blades. A shaft connects the rotatable hub to the generator. The wind flowing over the blades of a wind turbine creates lift, causes rotation and provides torque, and the shaft transmits the torque to the generator, which in turn generates electricity. The pitch of the blades is controlled by a pitch assembly that connects the blades to a rotatable hub. [0003] During operation of a wind turbine, one or more blades may be subjected to different wind conditions. These different wind conditions may result in different forces exerted by the blades on the rotatable hub. The rota...
