Embodiment Construction

[0018] The following details are generally aimed at facilitating virtual application management. Typically, an agent / manager approach is employed, where a virtual application is equipped with an agent that observes actions in the virtual application and provides the information to a manager located outside the application for further processing. However, traditional approaches are not well suited to current and future multi-layer virtualization. A single server can currently host dozens of virtual machines, and in the near future, servers will be able to host hundreds of virtual machines. Furthermore, the number of virtual machines residing on a server can change rapidly as virtual machines are deployed, removed, and moved from one server to another. The current agent manager approach requires that the application firstly equip an agent (but not always), and secondly establish a static link between the agent and the manager. The absolute size and associated liveness of a vir...

Abstract

Application management is facilitated by observing messages communicated amongst virtual applications external to application-hosting virtual machines. In one instance, the messages can be observed from within a virtual switch outside hosting virtual machines. One or more actions can subsequently be performed as a function of the messages such as but not limited to application monitoring as well as message routing, filtering, and/or transformation.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to virtual machines, and more particularly, to virtual application management. Background technique [0002] Information technology (IT) professionals are responsible for managing computing resources for businesses. Typically, these IT professionals are tasked with reducing costs and improving operational efficiency. However, data centers can quickly approach capacity, and purchasing new servers adds capital and operating expenses, among other costs. At the same time, servers are often and largely underutilized, and provisioning new machines is a lengthy process, making it difficult to respond to rapidly changing business needs. [0003] Virtual machine technology facilitates increased physical resource utilization and flexible machine provisioning. Traditionally, software applications are tightly coupled to the physical servers on which the software applications run. Virtual machine technology provides an abstraction ...
