Embodiment Construction

[0016] Embodiments will now be described with reference to the drawings, wherein like numerals represent like elements. specifically, figure 1 and the accompanying discussion are intended to provide a brief, general description of suitable computing environments in which various embodiments may be implemented.

[0017] Generally, program modules include routines, programs, components, data structures, and other types of structures that perform particular tasks or implement particular abstract data types. Other computer system configurations may also be used, including handheld devices, multiprocessor systems, microprocessor-based or programmable consumer electronics, minicomputers, mainframe computers, and the like. Distributed computing environments can also be used where tasks are performed by remote processing devices that are linked through a communications network. In a distributed computing environment, program modules may be located in both local and remote memory sto...

Abstract

The present invention relates to named object views over multiple files. Named Object View reports are generated from different electronic object sources. Object sources can be associated with different users and have different access rights. The different object sources from which objects are obtained can be determined using various methods. A named object view report is presented to the user at the client so that the user's attention is focused on different objects obtained from different object sources as if the objects were obtained from a single object source. Allows the user to cycle through objects obtained from different object sources. When a user edits an object within a report that is not associated with the user who is editing the object, the object is copied to an object source owned by the user.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to file handling, and more particularly to named object views. [0002] related application [0003] This application is pursuant to 35 U.S.C. 120 of U.S. Patent Application No. 11 / 223,541 filed September 9, 2005 (Attorney Docket No. 14917.276US01), and U.S. Patent Application No. 11 / 860,394 filed September 24, 2007 ( Attorney Docket No. 14917.708USI1) Interests. Background technique [0004] Some documents, such as spreadsheets, can include multiple sheets, each sheet including large amounts of data. Reports can be generated from one or more documents to present data in an organized format. However, reports can confuse users if they contain too much data. Users may need to search the entire report to locate desired information, which can be laborious and time consuming. Likewise, electronic documents typically include file-level security, allowing or denying access to the entire file. Such security can be both under...
