Abstract

A seismic streamer system and associated method for estimating the shape of a laterally steered seismic streamer. The streamer is divided into a series of contiguous streamer sections by a plurality of lateral deflectors. Multiple orientation sensors positioned in the leading and trailing portions of each segment produce multiple orientation readings. Each segment is modeled to have a rectilinear shape in the preceding portion and a curvilinear shape in the posterior portion. The shape of the segment is estimated from the direction readings on the segment by the model.
