Problems solved by technology

Current distribution mechanisms such as the Ethernet LAG protocol split traffic across multiple links at flow granularity, but can waste up to 60% of resources in dynamic environments
This happens because flow-level granularity does not enable efficient filling of the link's capacity

Abstract

The packet switching nodes are coupled to other nodes of the network by links, and receive packets belonging to a given packet flow and assemble (74) them into packet bursts with burst control packets indicating the sequence of bursts in the flow. The node determines (78) whether to distribute the flow across several links. If so, the burst is then forwarded (80) for switching to the output port (160) of the selected link. Distributing the flow over multiple links enables more flexible and efficient filling of the bandwidth allocated on the links as traffic increases. To reduce the risk of losing the order of packets, a sequence of bursts is indicated for use in reordering at intermediate nodes during transmission through the network.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to a method of operating a packet switching node, a method of controlling switching, a corresponding computer program, a service controller and a packet switching node. Background technique [0002] The need to enable low-cost delivery of new bandwidth-hungry services such as IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) has required a redesign of networks to enable efficient and flexible packet transport. The transmission technology historically associated with SDH (Synchronous Digital Highway) is evolving towards Ethernet with higher networking responsibilities. [0003] However, the deployment of Ethernet networks requires integration with the optical layer, as metro bandwidth requirements have led to the adoption of DWDM optical transport systems that rely on circuit-oriented architectures. Different solutions have emerged aimed at reducing capital and operating costs while integrating packet and circuit layers. For example, there are...
