Embodiment Construction

[0060] figure 1 A blood glucose meter (BGM) 100 is shown. BGM 100 is shown in perspective view. BGM 100 has a substantially flat base, not shown in the figures. The height of the BGM100 is about the same as its length, and its width is about one-third of its height.

[0061]On one side of the BGM, first, second and third input devices 101, 102, 103 are provided. These may take the form of push-switches or touch sensitive transducers, for example. Next to the input devices 101-103, also disposed on this side of the BGM is a display 104. It may take any suitable form, such as a liquid crystal display (LCD), electronic ink, or the like. In use, the user can use the input devices 101 - 103 to control the BGM 100 , and the BGM can provide information to the user through the display 104 .

[0062] Located on the front of the BGM 100 is an orifice 105 . The aperture 105 is located at about half the height of the BGM. Aperture 105 is configured to receive a portion of a user's...

Abstract

Apparatus for eliciting a blood sample comprises: a housing; a shaft (204) mounted within the housing; an aperture (105) in the housing, the aperture being configured to receive a part of a user; a member (208, 209, 210) rotatably mounted on the shaft; a lancet (309, 506) protruding from one position at an edge of the member, and a blood collection part located at a second, different position at the edge of the member. The apparatus is configured such that: when the member is in a first rotational position the lancet is shielded by the housing, when the member is in a second rotational position the lancet is operable to lance the part of the user received at the aperture, and when the member is in a third rotational position the blood collection part is presented such as to receive blood from the part of the user received at the aperture.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to methods and devices for drawing a blood sample, and to devices comprising a lancet and a blood collection portion. Background technique [0002] Diabetics may be given large amounts of insulin, for example by injection, sometimes several times a day. The appropriate amount of insulin depends on a person's blood sugar level, so blood sugar level measurements may also be taken several times a day. [0003] Blood glucose level measurement is generally a multi-stage process. The first is an incision, where a lancet or needle is used to penetrate the user's skin, for example at the end of a finger or on the side. Once the appropriate amount of blood has been produced, the specimen is placed on a test strip. It may take a person to pinch their finger to get enough blood out. Sometimes, incisions need to be repeated. Then, the test strip is provided to a meter, typically an electronic meter, which measures, for example, b...
