Problems solved by technology

Transmitting such a large amount of data in a single message or even in a series of separate messages may congest the server or terminal and interfere with other activities being performed by the server, terminal and service access network
Furthermore, there is a risk that the connection or location session between the server and the terminal may fail or be released before all help data has been transferred
In this case, the complete transfer may need to be restarted at a subsequent time

Embodiment Construction

[0024] figure 1 Shows the ability to communicate between a mobile terminal 120 (sometimes referred to as a UE, MS, SET, etc. or generally "target") and a location server 150 (sometimes referred to as a server) with both the mobile terminal 120 and the server 150 facilitating Rate network architecture 100 that transmits large amounts of data (eg help data or location information) in individual messages (eg LPP / LPPe messages). The LPP protocol is described in the publicly available 3GPP Technical Specification (TS) 36.355. LPPe is being defined by OMA and will be used in combination with LPP such that each combined LPP / LPPe message will be an LPP message containing an embedded LPPe message (as defined in 3GPP TS 36.355). While the LPP part in such a combined message will normally have a limited size (e.g. typically at most a few thousand octets), an embedded LPPe message can have a size of up to and even more than one Mbyte .

Abstract

By splitting the location-related information into multiple messages, a large amount of location-related information, such as help data or location information, is transmitted in a single message between the server and the target. If the connection between the server and the target is released before completing the transmission of the location-related information, the transmission is resumed by sending the remaining messages after the connection is re-established. Each message is sent after an acknowledgment of receipt is received. Thus, both the server and the target can control the flow of the transmission by delaying sending one or more messages or delaying sending an acknowledgment of receipt.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application is entitled under 35 USC 119 to Provisional Application No. 61 / 410,681 filed November 5, 2010, Provisional Application No. 61 / 454,931 filed March 21, 2011, and Provisional Application No. 61 / 454,931 filed September 16, 2011 Priority of US Serial No. 13 / 235,250, all of which are assigned to the assignee of the present application and are incorporated herein by reference. Background technique [0003] It is often desirable and sometimes necessary to know the location of a terminal, such as a cellular telephone. The terms "position" and "orientation" are synonymous and are used interchangeably herein. For example, a Location Services (LCS) client may wish to know the location of a terminal. A terminal (eg, user equipment (UE), mobile station (MS), secure user plane (SUPL) enabled terminal (SET), etc.) may then communicate with the location server to obtain a location estimate for the terminal. The termin...
