Problems solved by technology

Any confusion or error associated with the rescuer's unfamiliarity with the device in question could lead to unacceptable delays in disposal
[0012] Specifically, there is a possibility that, with existing advanced defibrillators, users unfamiliar with the intricacies of the advanced defibrillators may confuse the defibrillation controls on the front panel of the unit The difference between the appearance of the buttons and the appearance of the control buttons on the external board
Delay in disposition if less experienced user perceives treatment as different depending on control button

Embodiment Construction

[0023] now refer to figure 1 , illustrates a known defibrillator 100 configured to use both paddle electrodes 180 or attached pad electrodes 190 . The base of defibrillator 100 includes connector ports 170 for electrodes and user control panel 115 . Messages related to the status of the defibrillator, patient, and / or electrodes may be displayed on optional display 105 .

[0024] The user control panel 115 includes graphic and text label indicia located adjacent the controls associated with charging and discharging the defibrillation high energy circuit. figure 1 Illustrated is the use of textual instructions located adjacent to the corresponding controls, such as "Select Energy", "Charge", or "Shock". Alternatively, a 1-2-3 numbering scheme may be displayed on the user control panel 115 to help guide the user in the proper steps to perform the rescue. Thus, the first step of selecting energy may be indicated by a label "1", the second step of charging a high energy circuit ...

Abstract

An improved user interface for a defibrillator (100) capable of being used with paddle electrodes (180) and adhesive pad electrodes (190). A shock delivery button (110) located on the defibrillator control panel delivers a shock through the pad electrodes. A second shock delivery button (210), located on the paddle electrodes, delivers a shock through the paddle electrodes. Both shock delivery buttons are configured with the same shape, operation and illumination in order to reduce user confusion.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to defibrillators for cardiac resuscitation. In particular, the present invention relates to an improved user interface for delivering defibrillation therapy from a defibrillator configured for use in a handheld paddle format and an affixed applied electrode pad format the electrodes. Background technique [0002] Cardiac arrest is a life-threatening medical condition in which the patient's heart is unable to provide blood flow to support life. Defibrillators can be used to deliver defibrillating shocks to patients undergoing cardiac arrest or other cardiac arrhythmias. Defibrillators address this condition by delivering high-voltage pulses to the heart in order to restore normal rhythm and systolic function in patients experiencing an arrhythmia. [0003] Ventricular fibrillation (VF) or ventricular tachycardia (VT) are immediate life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias that are usually non-perfusing, ie, not accompanied b...
