Abstract

The invention discloses an apparatus for controlling the lateral direction of a vehicle and a method thereof. According to one embodiment of the present invention, the apparatus for controlling the lateral direction of a vehicle comprises a driver recognition unit, a driver pattern detection unit, and a lateral control unit. The driver recognition unit is configured to recognize a driver by means of at least one sensor arranged on a vehicle wherein the driver is driving. The driver pattern detection unit is configured to detect the driving pattern of the driver among a plurality of presorted driving patterns. The lateral control unit is configured to control the lateral direction of the vehicle according to the detected driving pattern of the driver. When the torque of an electric power steering system (MDPS) is smaller than a predetermined critical value, the lateral control part controls the lateral direction of the vehicle according to the detected driving pattern of the driver. In this way, the lateral control is implemented according to the driving tendency of the driver, so that potential accidents caused by incorrect driving tendencies of drivers can be prevented. Meanwhile, unidentified troubles during the lateral control process can also be eliminated.
