[0018] In accordance with the present principles, in order to generate clinically relevant and reliable results, an automated planning system is provided that allows precise positioning of the probe and complete coverage of the tumor and margin (planned target volume, PTV). An automatic coverage method is described. The search for the optimal ablation center is treated as an iterative nonlinear optimization problem, where the cost function is expressed as a weighted sum of the unablated PTV volume and the undesired collateral damage to adjacent healthy tissue. This is a nonlinear optimization problem that aims to minimize untreated cancerous tissue as well as damaged healthy tissue.
