Abstract

The invention provides a tracking device and a tracking method. The tracking device includes a group setting unit, a tracking feature detection unit and a tracking unit. The grouping setting unit groups a plurality of focus detection areas according to a focus state. The tracking feature detection unit detects feature amounts of the tracking targets within the grouped focus detection area. The tracking unit tracks the tracking target at the first tracking position as the focus detection area in the in-focus state or at the second tracking position as a part of the feature value based on the number of groups.
