Embodiment Construction

[0108] Figure 1 schematically illustrates some aspects of a conventional wireless telecommunications system 100 supporting Multimedia Broadcast / Multicast Services Single Frequency Network (MBSFN) technology. In this example, the system 100 is generally considered to be 3GPP LTE compliant, such that the various elements are compliant to the relevant 3GPP LTE standards to the extent they are defined.

[0109] The system 100 includes: a network component 102 ; a terminal device / user equipment (UE) 104 ; and a content provider 108 for providing multimedia content to the network 102 for broadcast to the terminal device 104 . In general, there will of course be multiple UEs served by the network 102 . For example, the content provider may be an independent news service provider configured to use the network 102 to provide media content to user UEs in a conventional manner. It should be appreciated that there will be many other elements of the system 100, in particular elements of t...

Abstract

Methods and apparatus for transmitting data to terminal devices in a wireless telecommunications system are described. The data may be user-plane data associated with a repeating Multimedia Broadcast / Multicast Services (MBMS) session which is to be transmitted using MBMS over a Single Frequency Network (MBSFN) techniques in a network comprising at least one relay node supported by a donor base station. The scheme involves delivering the data from the base station to the relay node in advance of a scheduled transmission to terminal devices at a first time, and transmitting the data from the relay node to a terminal device at the first time. The relay node is further arranged to store the data in a cache. The relay node may then retrieve the data from the cache in advance of a scheduled transmission to terminal devices at a second time, and transmit the retrieved data to a terminal device at the second time. Thus the relay node is able to play a role in supporting a repeated MBSFN transmission at both a first time and a second time, while only receiving data from the base station once. This saves on the resources that would otherwise be used in delivering data for subsequent transmission from the base station to the relay node.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to methods, systems and devices for transmitting data in a mobile telecommunication system. Background technique [0002] Third- and fourth-generation mobile telecommunication systems, such as those based on the UMTS and Long Term Evolution (LTE) architectures defined by 3GPP, are capable of supporting more complex services than the simple voice and SMS services provided by previous generations of mobile telecommunication systems. Serve. [0003] For example, as LTE systems provide improved radio interfaces and enhanced data rates, users are able to enjoy high data rate applications such as mobile video streaming and mobile video conferencing that were previously only available via fixed line data connections. As a result, the need to deploy third- and fourth-generation networks has become strong, and the coverage areas (i.e., geographical locations where the network can be accessed) of these networks are expected to incr...
