Problems solved by technology

In either case, these non-compliant deviations could cause a particular instance to not function properly and / or could affect the efficiency of the instance within the computer system as a whole, which could affect other instances and / or the overall efficiency of the computer system
However, as the number of instance types increases, it becomes increasingly difficult to provide a single passive monitoring tool for all types as the number of operating systems, middleware, and applications increase
Also, any attempt to update or customize the tool will cause the tool to require more resources or become unstable

Embodiment Construction

[0021] As described above, aspects of the present invention provide a solution for passively monitoring a computer system. The indexing agent runs on a physical server with multiple virtual servers. The indexing agent has a framework that includes multiple indexing layers. Each of the indexing layers is adapted to index the virtual servers along a different level of abstraction to extract abstraction level features indicative of changes in the virtual servers. Furthermore, each of these indexing layers has an application programming interface adapted to receive one or more external indexing modules to be inserted into the framework. Each indexing module is adapted to provide instructions to the indexing agent while the indexing layer into which it is inserted indexes an associated level of abstraction of the virtual machine.

[0022] Referring now to the accompanying drawings, figure 1 An exemplary environment 100 for passively monitoring computer systems is shown. To this...

Abstract

Aspects of the present invention provide a solution for passively monitoring a computer system. In an embodiment, an indexing agent operates on a physical server having a plurality of virtual servers. The indexing agent has a framework having a plurality of indexing layers. Each of these indexing layers is adapted to index a virtual server along a different abstraction level to extract abstraction level features indicative of changes in the virtual server. Further, each of the indexing layers has an application programming interface, which is adapted to receive one or more external indexing modules to be plugged into the framework. Each indexing module is adapted to provide instructions to the indexing agent while the indexing layer to which it is plugged is indexing the associated abstraction level of the virtual machine.

Description

technical field [0001] The subject matter of the present invention generally relates to computer system administration. More specifically, aspects of the invention provide solutions for improved passive monitoring in complex virtual environments. Background technique [0002] In today's electronic environment, computer systems are constantly changing. To keep up with these changes, it is important that users of these systems have the ability to monitor the system. Monitoring can be divided into several different types, including active monitoring and passive monitoring. Passive monitoring includes any observation that does not modify computer systems. In this regard, passive monitoring may include scanning the file system to perform compliance checks, scanning the registry to determine which applications are currently installed on the system, security scanning, file system detection, license usage monitoring, and the like. In contrast, activities that involve modifying c...
