Problems solved by technology

[0003] The control circuit of the medical device described in WO 2009 / 024562 can thus be used with a series of prefilled disposable injection devices, but the RFID unit with the value sensor is included in the prefilled disposable injection device. Requirements in the medicament container significantly increase the cost of prefilled disposable injection devices

Embodiment Construction

[0048] Hereinafter, embodiments of the present invention will be described with reference to an insulin injection device. The invention is however not limited to such applications, but may equally well be used in injection devices for injecting other medicaments, or in other types of medical devices.

[0049]Figure 1a is an exploded view of an injection device 1 which may represent, for example, Sanofi's Insulin injection pen.

[0050] Figure 1a The injection device 1 is a prefilled, disposable injection pen comprising a housing 10 and containing an insulin container 14 to which a needle 15 can be attached. The needle is protected by an inner needle cap 16 and an outer needle cap 17 which in turn may be covered by a cap 18 . The dose of insulin ejected from the injection device 1 can be selected by turning the dose knob 12, and the selected dose is then displayed via the dose window 13, for example a number of so-called International Units (IU), where one IU is approximate...

Abstract

A supplemental device (2) for attachment to an injection device (1) comprises: a display (21); a processor arrangement (24); a dose dialed detector (25) operable to detect a dose of medicament dialed into an attached injection device (1); a dose delivery determiner (27) for determining that a dose of medicament has been delivered (24, 25); a quantity determiner determining a quantity of medicament that has been delivered; and a clock configured to determine a current time. The processor arrangement (24) is configured when the supplemental device is in a default mode to display both a quantity of medicament that was delivered since a last dose and a time elapsed since delivery of the last dose.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to an auxiliary device for attachment to an injection device. Background technique [0002] There are various diseases that require regular treatment by injecting medicaments. Such injections may be performed by using an injection device applied by medical personnel or by the patient himself. As an example, types 1 and 2 can be treated by the patient himself by injecting insulin doses, eg once or several times a day. For example, prefilled disposable insulin pens can be used as injection devices. Alternatively, a reusable pen can be used. The reusable pen allows replacing an empty drug cartridge with a new one. Either pen can be accompanied by a set of one-way needles that are replaced before each use. The insulin dose to be injected can then be selected manually at the insulin pen, eg by turning the dose knob and viewing the actual dose from the insulin pen's dose window or display. The dose is then injected by inserting th...
