Embodiment Construction

[0014] As used herein, "a", "an" and "the" in the singular include plural unless expressly stated otherwise. As used herein, the statement that two or more parts or components are "coupled" means that these parts are joined together or operate together, directly or indirectly (ie, through one or more intermediate parts or components), so long as a connection occurs. As used herein, "directly coupled" means that two elements are in direct contact with each other. As used herein, "fixedly coupled" or "fixed" means that two components are coupled so as to move as one while maintaining a constant orientation relative to each other.

[0015] The word "unitary" as used herein means that a component is produced as a single piece or unit. That is, a component that includes pieces that are created separately and then coupled together as a unit is not a "unitary" component or body. As used herein, the statement that two or more parts or components "engage" one another means that the p...

Abstract

The present disclosure pertains to a portable handheld pressure support system configured to deliver a blending gas enriched pressurized flow of breathable gas to the airway of a subject. The pressure support system is configured to treat patients suffering from dyspnea and / or other conditions. The therapy provided to dyspnea patients is configured to be used as needed by a subject to rapidly alleviate shortness of breath. The pressure support system is configured to be small and lightweight so that the subject may carry the system and use the system as needed without requiring a device to be worn on the face. In some embodiments, the system comprises one or more of a pressure generator, a subject interface, a blending gas inlet port, one or more sensors, a valve, one or more processors, a user interface, electronic storage, a portable power source, a housing, a handle, and / or other components.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This patent application claims priority under 35 U.S.C. §119(e) to U.S. Provisional Application No. 61 / 653,052, filed May 30, 2012, the contents of which are incorporated by reference In this article. field of invention [0003] The present invention relates to a portable, hand-held pressure support system configured to deliver a pressurized flow of breathable gas enriched in a mixture to the airway of a subject. Background technique [0004] It is known to apply positive air pressure to the patient's airway to keep the airway open and prevent it from collapsing during breathing. This positive pressure effectively "stretches" the airway, thereby maintaining an open passage to the lungs. Difficulty breathing, or shortness of breath, is the main symptom of COPD. People with COPD experience shortness of breath when exerting themselves. Forms of exertion can include doing chores, walking to the local store, or climbing...
