A vehicle coasting control system and method, the system comprising an accelerator pedal positioned throughout a range of accelerator pedal positions; a vehicle controller coupled to the accelerator pedal, the vehicle controller being adapted to control the operating speed of a prime mover of the vehicle, the operating speeds being respectively corresponding to an accelerator pedal position within a range of accelerator pedal positions; and the vehicle controller is adapted to operate the prime mover at idle speed when the accelerator pedal is in a coasting region within the range of accelerator pedal positions.
