Embodiment Construction

[0098]The engine control module (ECM) controls the torque output of the engine. More specifically, the ECM controls the actuators of the engine based on target values according to the requested torque amount, respectively. For example, ECM controls intake and exhaust camshaft phasing based on target intake and exhaust phaser angles, throttle valve based on target throttle opening, exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve based on target EGR opening And a wastegate of the turbocharger is controlled based on the target wastegate duty cycle.

[0099] The ECM may individually use multiple single-input single-output (SISO) controllers, such as proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controllers, to determine the target value. However, when using multiple SISO controllers, target values can be set to maintain system stability at the expense of possible fuel consumption reduction. Furthermore, the calibration and design of individual SISO controllers can be expensive and time-consu...

Abstract

Engine control systems and methods for future torque request increases are disclosed. An engine control method includes: generating a torque request for the engine based on driver input; controlling: based on the torque request: the opening of the wastegate of the turbocharger; the opening of the throttle valve based on the torque request; and the intake valve phaser and Exhaust valve phaser. The engine control method further includes selectively determining an expected future increase in torque request. The engine control method further includes, based on the expected future increase and before the torque request is increased based on the expected future increase: reducing the opening of the wastegate; and at least one of: reducing the opening of the throttle valve; and adjusting the intake air at least one of a valve phaser and an exhaust valve phaser to reduce the volumetric efficiency of the engine.
