[0066] exist figure 1 An overview of the method used to encode bit-fields is shown in . The bit field suitably includes a first number of set bits and a second number of unset bits. The set bit can be "1" and the unset bit can be "0" or vice versa. The method may comprise determining a possible number arrangement of a first number of set bits and a second number of unset bits located in the bit field (step 101 ). The bit field is then assigned an identifier that uniquely identifies its particular arrangement of set and unset bits among the range of possible arrangements of those bits (step 102). This identifier can then be used to represent the bit field (step 103), which in turn can be viewed as a compressed version of the bit field.

[0067] The method will now be described in detail in connection with a particular application in which a probabilistic data structure is used to communicate acknowledgments between two communication devices in a communication network. This ...

Abstract

A communication device configured to identify a message that it has received successfully from another communication device and transmit an acknowledgement of the message that ambiguously identifies the message as being a message that was successfully received by the communication device. The communication device may be configured to form the acknowledgement using a bit-field that consists of a first number of set bits and a second number of non-set bits. The communication device may compress the bit-field for transmission representing the bit-field by an identifier that identifies its arrangement of the first number of set bits and the second number of non-set bits uniquely amongst the number of possible arrangements of those bits within the bit-field.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to a method for generating and compressing a probabilistic data structure, and a method and communication device for acknowledging successfully received packets in a communication network. Background technique [0002] Some wireless systems are very limited in bandwidth. This can impose severe constraints on how the wireless system is operated. In particular, wireless networks of star topology (ie, a single base station serving many terminals) may have very asymmetric overall data rates (ie, a base station can send much less information than it can receive). [0003] For example, a base station in a star topology wireless network may operate with constrained duty cycle and transmit power. However, it needs to be able to serve many terminals in its coverage cell. Thus, a terminal may only be able to send a very small amount of information in response to each message it receives from it. Throughput limited wireless systems such ...
