Abstract

The present disclosure relates to electronic devices having motion characterization circuits. An electronic device may include a motion sensor for detecting movement of the electronic device. Applications running on electronic devices, such as fitness applications or activity tracking applications, may use motion sensor data to track a user's physical activity. To avoid incorrectly characterizing the user's movement, motion sensor circuitry in the electronic device may supplement the motion sensor data with additional information in situations where the motion sensor data by itself may not be sufficient to distinguish between different types of physical activity. For example, information about a user's speed can be combined with motion sensor data to help characterize user movement. Information about user speed may be determined based on location information. Location information can be collected, for example, using IEEE 802.11 transceiver circuitry or, in remote locations, global positioning system receiver circuitry.
