Embodiment Construction

[0017] As required, specific embodiments of the present invention are disclosed herein; however, it should be understood that the disclosed embodiments are merely examples of the present invention that can be implemented in various and alternative forms. The drawings are not necessarily drawn to scale; some features may be exaggerated or reduced to show details of specific components. Therefore, the specific structural and functional details disclosed herein should not be construed as restrictive, but merely serve as a representative basis for teaching those skilled in the art to use the present invention in different ways.

[0018] The step ratio transmission includes a limited number of selectable transmission ratios. Therefore, a stepped transmission ratio transmission is usually associated with a shift schedule with a table of desired transmission ratios under various operating conditions. If the transmission shifts from the first gear ratio to the second gear ratio when the...

Abstract

A vehicle includes a transmission and a controller. The controller is configured to receive a torque request, calculate an SFC for satisfying the torque request in an initial gear and in an alternate gear, and command the transmission to shift from the initial gear into the alternate gear in response to the calculated SFC for satisfying the torque request in the alternate gear being less than the calculated SFC for satisfying the torque request in the initial gear.

Description

Technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates to the field of automatic transmissions for motor vehicles. More specifically, the present disclosure relates to a system and method for planning shifts between transmission ratios. Background technique [0002] Some vehicles are used in a wide range of speeds, including both forward and reverse movement. However, certain types of engines can only operate efficiently in a narrow range of vehicle speeds. Therefore, a transmission that can efficiently transmit power at multiple speed ratios is often used. When the vehicle is at a low speed, the transmission is usually operated at a high speed ratio to be able to double the engine torque to increase acceleration. At high vehicle speeds, operation of the transmission at a low speed ratio allows engine speed to be associated with quiet, fuel-efficient cruise. Generally, the transmission has a housing mounted to the vehicle structure, an input shaft driven by the engine cranksha...
