Embodiment Construction

[0023] The present principles involve the use of tone mapping techniques to encode and decode HDR images and video. The tone mapping function takes a high bit-depth integer as input and returns a low bit-depth integer, and the inverse tone mapping function takes a low bit-depth integer as input and returns a high bit-depth integer. In this application, the terms "tone mapping function", "tone mapping curve" and "tone curve" are used interchangeably, and the terms "inverse tone mapping function" and "inverse tone mapping curve" are used interchangeably.

[0024] In one embodiment, such as figure 1 As shown in , a mathematical model of a compression scheme is defined. In this model, images are considered compressed and pixels have real values (not necessarily integers). The input image I has a probability distribution function (pdf)p, and its minimum and maximum pixel values are x min and x max .

[0025] First, a compression function F is applied to the pixel values, ...

Abstract

To encode a high dynamic range (HDR) image, the HDR image may be converted into a low dynamic range (LDR) image through a tone mapping operation, and the LDR image may be encoded with an LDR encoder. This principle formulates the rate-distortion minimization problem when designing tone-mapping curves. In particular, the tone mapping curve is constructed as a function of the probability distribution function of the HDR image to be encoded and the Lagrangian multipliers based on the encoding parameters. At the decoder, based on the parameters representing the tone mapping function, an inverse tone mapping function can be derived from the decoded LDR image to reconstruct the HDR image.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims the benefit of European Application No. 14305266, filed 26 February 2014, and European Application No. 14305480, filed 1 April 2014, the entire contents of which are hereby incorporated by reference. technical field [0003] The present invention relates to methods and apparatus for encoding and decoding high dynamic range (HDR) images and video. Background technique [0004] Tools for compressing image sequences are often designed to encode integer data with limited dynamic range. For example, compression standards such as MPEG-4 AVC / H.264 and HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding) can be used to compress images and videos whose color components are represented by 8-bit integers. In extended versions of these standards, data with higher bit depths can be used as input. For example, in the range-extended version of HEVC, bit depths capped at 16 bits are supported. High bit depth extensions may ...
