[0109] Example 1: Topical Artesunate for Seborrheic Keratosis

[0110] In preliminary in vivo studies, the A formulation containing 10% artesunate in fat ointment (3 g artesunate with 27 g fatty ointment evenly stirred) topically once daily to 5 seborrheic keratotic lesions in 2 patients. Lesion images at day 0 (baseline) were obtained using a Digital 1-CCD camera, and patient 1 was followed up for 6 weeks after the start of treatment, while patient 2 was followed up for 3 months after the start of treatment.

Abstract

The invention relates to a method of treating or preventing seborrheic keratosis. The method comprises locally applying to a subject in need thereof artemisinin and / or one or more structurally related compounds. Also disclosed are topical formulations comprising artemisinin and / or one or more structurally related compounds.

Description

Background technique [0001] The present invention relates to the treatment or prevention of seborrheic keratoses of the skin using topical formulations, in particular topical formulations. Furthermore, it relates to topical formulations suitable for this purpose. [0002] Seborrheic keratosis is one of the most common noncancerous, benign epidermal skin tumors. It is a harmless skin growth derived from keratinocytes of the epidermis. Keratinocytes are the major cell type of the epidermis (the outermost layer of the skin), accounting for 80% of the cells found therein. Those keratinocytes found in the base layer (basal layer) of the epidermis are sometimes called "basal cells" or "basal keratinocytes." [0003] The main function of keratinocytes is to form a barrier against environmental pathologies such as pathogens (bacteria, fungi, parasites and viruses), heat, UV radiation and water loss. Keratinization is part of the formation of a physical barrier (keratinization), in...
