A continent ostomy port device has a generally planar face plate defining a selectively sealable aperture which is alignable with the opening of a stoma formed in the body of a user of the device. A closure portion is connected to the generally planar face plate adjacent to the aperture and is adapted to permit selective and repeatable covering and uncovering of the aperture in the generally planar face plate. A catheter portion extends from one side of the face plate and extends proximally, and one end of the catheter portion is disposed interior of the user's body, within the ostomy site, when the port device is in normal use position. The catheter portion has continuous and generally cylindrical exterior and interior side walls, the latter defining a major lumen. The catheter portion is sized and shaped appropriately for non-surgical insertion through a stoma to a sufficient distance that the presence of the catheter portion within the stoma provides a physical barrier which reduces the incidence of stoma prolapse, without the use of extraneous, externally applied materials or additional surgery. A removable cartridge is sized and shaped to fit snugly and slideably within the major lumen of the catheter portion of the device so as to be liquid-tight and to thereby prevent inadvertent escape of body waste material from the stoma through the device when the cartridge is in place, so that the user is not required to wear an ostomy bag, and to further thereby clean the interior side wall of the catheter portion as the cartridge is pressed into the major lumen of the catheter. A selectively operable anti-reflux valve that is attached internally of the proximal end of the catheter portion and is activated when it is desired to prevent escape of body waste through the port device, and deactivated when it is desired to permit passage of fluid through the port device. Retaining structure is connected to the catheter, and is non-surgically, snugly fittable into the stoma, to cause the port device to be self-retaining in a normal use position within a stoma of the user, without the need for special surgery and extraneous, external fixation materials such as tape, belts, and adhesives.

A portable enclosure has a hinged or slide opening capable of containing several RFID tags embedded in other devices. The present invention provides two layer portable enclosures. The inner layer is a protective layer that keeps signals from hitting the RFID tags. The outer layer is a physical barrier against the elements and serves a decorative function. The inner layer metal is preferably, but not limited to, copper, silver, aluminum, tin or any other metal capable of attenuating completely the wavelength necessary to reach and activate the embedded RFID tag. Physical access systems and methods securely grant physical access to restricted areas in high-volume applications. An electronic device, such as a smartphone, stores a digitally signed physical access rights file. An individual uses this rights file to gain access to a restricted area only after self-authenticating to the device. A physical access control system receives the rights file, validates it, and determines whether to permit passage through a physical barrier. The determination may be made by a physical barrier system, or by a remote access control headend. An access control gateway, which may be an access control headend, may either unlock the physical barrier system when the electronic device is near the physical barrier, or it may transmit an authorization code to the electronic device and the physical barrier system, whereby passage is only permitted if the barrier system subsequently receives the authorization code from the electronic device using near field communications.

This is accomplished by the Crupax Flight Deck Security System (FDSS), which provides a lightweight, flexible, mechanically strong isolation curtain which is mounted in the aircraft cabin at a predetermined distance from the cockpit door to act as a physical barrier that cannot be penetrated by unauthorized persons while the cockpit door is unlocked. The curtain forms a secure zone at the cockpit door whereby a person wanting to gain entry to the flight deck will stand so that the pilot can positively identify the person as bona fide aircrew member or as a person known to him/her. A type of multilayered glove consisting of an inner layer, an outer layer, and pigments between the layers is disclosed. The layers can be made of the same or different materials to incorporate desired barrier properties such as oil or chemical resistance to a glove. The layers can also be made of the same or different colors. The glove can have the same physical barrier protection as wearing two gloves, but without the discomfort of wearing two gloves. The apparatus comprises primary sensor means adapted to measure a magnetic field, arranged in communication with signal processing means configured to identify temporal variations in the measured magnetic field due to the movement of a ferromagnetic object within an ambient magnetic field and to provide an output indicative of the presence of a ferromagnetic object in the vicinity of the primary sensor means. The apparatus further comprises secondary, non-magnetic, sensor means adapted to detect the movement of objects in the vicinity of the primary sensor means in order to reduce false alarms. The output from the signal processing means may be used to operate an audible alarm, a visual alarm, an automatic door lock or a physical barrier.

A method and apparatus for alerting a colostomate or medical attendant to the presence of fecal matter. The device includes a hollow plug detachably securable to a flexible port positioned about the stoma. The port carries an alarm circuit which is triggered when fecal matter enters the plug lumen which will alert the colostomate to an impending episode. The signal may be vibratory, audible or visible and may be transmitted to a remote location. The device includes an inflatable air cuff which, when inflated, presents a physical barrier to the passage of fecal matter. Gas may pass through filters in the tube. The method involves positioning the device in the stoma, inflating the cuff and generating an alarm when matter is sensed.

A method for manufacturing an electrochromic window positions a pattern of conductive lines over a first transparent substrate, a transparent conductive film over the pattern of conductive lines and first transparent substrate, and an electrochromic layer over the transparent conductive film, wherein the transparent conductive layer is a physical barrier separating the electrochromic layer from the pattern of conductive lines. The first transparent substrate may be flexible. The pattern of conductive lines and transparent conductive film may be deposited and processed at a temperature less than 180 degrees C. The pattern of conductive lines may be deposited on the first transparent substrate by printing techniques.

A biodegradable spectrally selective grow tube or tree shelter that improves the establishment of woody plant forms by reduction and/or elimination of certain biotic and abiotic stress factors. The grow tube may provide an enhanced micro climate that is humid, CO₂-replenished and promotes photosynthesis by selectively propagating photosynthetically active radiation. In addition to providing a physical barrier to wind and herbivores, certain embodiments of the grow tube can also provide protection from chemical sprays while permitting ventilation of the grow tube. Various embodiments of the spectrally selective grow tube may comprise separate interior and exterior members for enhancement of the interior and exterior surface functions and that may be constructed from a biodegradeable polymer or paper-based material. A medical device for delivering material through tissue into a defined area of a patient may comprise: a material delivery element through which the material may flow out of a delivery end; the delivery end having an opening that can be inserted through a surface of the tissue; and a sealing system proximal to the delivery end that can extend away from the material delivery element along the surface of the tissue and apply pressure to the tissue after the material delivery element has been inserted through the surface of the tissue. An article comprising a substrate formed of a silicon-comprising material, such as an article exposed to the hostile thermal environment of a gas turbine engine. The article further comprises an environmental barrier layer, e.g., an alkaline earth metal aluminosilicate, and a physical barrier layer overlying the environmental barrier layer. The physical barrier layer comprises zirconia or hafnia stabilized with an oxide of a metal selected from the group consisting of magnesium, calcium, scandium, yttrium, and lanthanide metals; and a low CTE oxide selected from the group consisting of niobia and tantala; and mixtures thereof. A method for preparing an environmental barrier coating system on a substrate formed of a silicon-comprising material is also disclosed.
