The invention generally concerns systems and methods for monitoring and controlling the power consumption of a power-consuming device. The system and method may connect to a power source and a power-consuming device, connecting the power-consuming device to the power source. The power usage of the power-consuming device may then be measured and monitored. This monitoring data may then be stored and optionally sent to a controlling device on a data network. The location of the power-consuming device may also be determined, recorded, and sent to a controlling device. The system may also control the power usage of the power-consuming device. In some cases, a remote server may connect multiple energy monitoring systems in order to gain additional efficiencies and foster a community-based social network.

Methods and systems are provided for controlling the charging of onboard energy storage systems of a plurality of plug-in vehicles using a remote command center. A system for directing the charging of a plurality of remotely located plug-in vehicles is provided. The method comprises: providing connections to the vehicle for the supply of a fuel and for transfer of electricity; determining the current cost of fuel and price paid for generating electricity; based at least on the cost of fuel and price paid for generating electricity, determining whether to make the fuel cell powered vehicle available for generation of electricity; when fuel is consumed by the vehicle and electricity generated by the vehicle, collecting data on the quantity of fuel consumed and amount of electricity generated, calculating the cost of the fuel and the value of the electricity generated, providing a debit charge for the cost of fuel consumed and a credit charge for the value of electricity generated. A method to enable the real time buying and selling of electricity generated by fuel cell powered vehicles between an energy service provider and a consumer of electricity is also disclosed.

An energy management system for an appliance comprising an interface to receive a schedule having an off-peak time segment and an on-peak time segment; a control to determine an operation to be performed by the appliance; a mode selecting device to select between an energy management mode and an immediate start mode; and a controller connected to the interface, the control, and the mode selecting device. The controller is arranged such that upon selection of the energy management mode, the controller initiates the operation only when a current time is within the off-peak time segment; and upon selection of the immediate start mode, the controller initiates the operation immediately.

A method, apparatus, and system for providing a power monitoring service to an electric power consumer at a power consumer site involves providing a monitoring unit at the power consumer site with connections to probes on individual power distribution circuits emanating from a power distribution and control panel of the consumer site. The monitoring unit measures a power consumption of each of the power distribution circuits using the probes, and communicates power consumption data related to the respective power distribution circuits to a power monitoring server that collects and analyzes the power consumption data. The power monitoring server has a circuit description table that identifies each of the power distribution circuits to permit detailed billing to the power consumer. The monitoring server also uses per-circuit information relating to many power consumers to compute at least one aggregate power consumption profile.

A network-controlled charge transfer device for transferring charge between a local power grid and an electric vehicle is mounted to a street light. The charge transfer device includes the following: an electrical receptacle to receive an electrical connector for connection to the electric vehicle; an electric power line that couples the power grid to the electrical receptacle through a wiring box; a control device to switch the receptacle on and off; a current measuring device to measure current flowing through the electric power line; and a controller to operate the control device and to monitor output from the current measuring device.

The management server performs billing so that in exchange for the transmission of the advertising information, at least part of a charging power fee is caused to be borne by the advertising provider side to thereby discount an amount borne by an electric powered vehicle user.

The system also includes a metering system for recording the amount of electrical power or electricity utilized to charge or recharge the vehicle. The metering system includes tracking and recording of the cost of the electrical power which is used to recharge or charge the vehicle. This system further is capable of producing a receipt which can be presented to an individual associated with the vehicle. This system is further capable of tracking these business transactions, recording them, accounting for them and transmitting the information to a Host Billing Center. This system is preferably located at parking facilities located at transportation centers, public and private municipal parking facilities, parking facilities located at hotels, motels, casinos, entertainment complexes, parking facilities at hospital, educational, and corporate campuses, and parking facilities located at shopping. The business transaction/costs for recharging or charging the vehicle may be completed as the service is completed or they may be transmitted to a centralized accounting system for incorporation in a master bill.
