Embodiment Construction

[0030] Figure 1-Figure 2 The implantation location of an illustrative cardiac system is shown. The present invention can be applied as figure 1 shown in the subcutaneous system only, or as figure 2 The transvenous system is shown in. Alternatives may include having multiple subcutaneous, transvenous, and / or intracardiac components, an epicardial system, or a fully intravenous or intracardiac system.

[0031] figure 1 The illustrative system shown in is shown relative to a heart 10 and is intended to deliver a subcutaneous implant that would occur under the patient's ribs and skin of the patient. Canister 12 is implanted near the left armpit, where lateral, anterior or posterior positions are possible. Lead wires 14 couple canister 12 to electrodes 16, 18 and 20, which are shown implanted along the patient's sternum, typically on the left or right side thereof. figure 1 The system in may include an external programmer 22 configured to communicate with the implant 12.

Abstract

An implantable medical device is disclosed comprising electrodes (320) for sensing cardiac signals, autocorrelation means (322) for generating an autocorrelation function from the sensed cardiac signals, and for using the Analysis means (324) for determining one or more estimates (326) of heart rate based on the output of the autocorrelation means. A peak selector device (340) and a tracking device (342) may also be included as secondary elements. The device can provide an alternative calculation of heart rate as a stand-alone rate detector or as a means for double checking other rate calculations.
