Problems solved by technology

In many cases, inhalers with relatively simple flow paths may be characterized by poor efficiency, such as typically less than 30% of the nominal dose delivered to the deep lung
Conversely, inhalers with relatively more complex internal flow paths can increase efficiency, such as up to 40% or less of the nominal dose, however, the increased complexity of the internal flow path may lead to increased deposition within the inhaler, This actually reduces the overall dose delivered to the patient and contaminates the device
Furthermore, most of the dry powder inhalers available today have no means of providing feedback to the user that they have used the device correctly
Improper use may result in poor inhaler effects

Embodiment Construction

[0033] The present invention relates to pulmonary drug or dosage form delivery, in particular to dry powder inhalers for delivering powder or medicament into the lungs of a patient. Such a powder dispersing mechanism may include an actuator located within a chamber arranged and configured to cause a sudden, rapid or otherwise abrupt expansion of the fluid upon entry into the chamber. During vibration of the actuator, the actuator may emit an audible sound or response, which may provide feedback to the user of the inhaler. The characteristics of the audible response can be tuned based on various geometric properties of the inhaler as well as material selection. Additionally, at least the chamber is formed to exhibit one or more properties that prevent or at least minimize accumulation and / or accumulation of powder in the chamber with the actuator. This advantageously prevents large doses of powder from being delivered to the patient, which may occur when inadvertently deposite...

Abstract

A dry powder inhaler includes a powder storage element containing powdered medicament and an inlet channel for receiving the powdered medicament, from which air flow enters the powder storage element and entrains the powdered medicament. The inlet channel has a first diameter and defines an opening. The inhaler includes a dispersion chamber that receives the air flow and the powdered medicament from the opening. The dispersion chamber has a second diameter. The inhaler includes an actuator positioned within the dispersion chamber. The actuator vibrates within the dispersion chamber when exposed to the air flow to decluster the powdered medicament entrained by the air flow through the dispersion chamber. A ratio between the first diameter and the second diameter is about 0.40 to 0.60 to produce an audible sound as the actuator vibrates. The inhaler includes an outlet channel through which the air stream and powdered medicament exit the inhaler.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application is related to and claims U.S. Provisional Patent Application Serial No. 61 / 942954, filed February 21, 2014, and entitled "Powder Dispersion Method and Apparatus," and Serial No. 62 / 103485, filed January 14, 2015 and the priority of US Provisional Patent Application entitled "Powder Dispersion Method and Apparatus," the entire contents of which are hereby incorporated by reference for all purposes. Background technique [0003] In the field of dry powder inhalers, there is often a trade-off between performance, as defined by the efficiency of the nominal or loaded dose delivered to the lungs within the inhaler, and the internal geometry, in particular, of the dose as it leaves the device. There is a tradeoff between the device complexity represented by the powder flow path. In many cases, inhalers with relatively simple flow paths may be characterized by poor efficiency, such as typically less than 30% ...
