Problems solved by technology

[0006] A disadvantage of long-path EGR systems is the potential for water condensation in cold ambient conditions
In fact, during the engine warm-up phase in cold ambient conditions, the exhaust gas mixed with fresh air condenses, producing water droplets that flow to the compressor wheel, thereby damaging the compressor of the turbocharger

Embodiment Construction

[0048] Some embodiments of the invention may include such as figure 1 and figure 2 The illustrated automotive system 100 includes an internal combustion engine (ICE) 110 , such as a compression ignition engine (eg, a diesel engine) or a spark ignition engine (eg, a gasoline engine). The ICE 110 has an engine block 120 defining at least one cylinder 125 having a piston 140 coupled to rotate a crankshaft 145 . Cylinder head 130 cooperates with piston 140 to define combustion chamber 150 . A fuel and air mixture (not shown) is disposed in combustion chamber 150 and ignited, the resulting thermally expanding exhaust gases cause piston 140 to reciprocate. Fuel is provided by at least one fuel injector 160 and air is provided through at least one intake port 210 . Fuel is provided to fuel injector 160 at high pressure from fuel rail 170 which is in fluid communication with high pressure fuel pump 180 which increases the pressure of fuel received from fuel source 190 . Each cyli...

Abstract

A method is disclosed for operating an internal combustion engine having a turbocharger and an exhaust gas recirculation pipe fluidly connecting an exhaust system to an air intake system upstream of a compressor of the turbocharger. A first value of a parameter indicative of the density of a mixture of fresh air and exhaust gas in the air intake system is determined. A flowing of exhaust gas through the exhaust gas recirculation pipe is interrupted if the first value is lower than a first reference value thereof.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates to a method of operating an internal combustion engine with a turbocharger, such as a compression ignition engine (eg, a diesel engine) with a turbocharger, of a motor vehicle. Background technique [0002] An internal combustion engine (ICE) typically includes an intake system, which includes an intake manifold and air ducts for delivering fresh air from the environment into the intake manifold; an exhaust system, which includes an exhaust manifold for collects exhaust gases and directs them to the exhaust pipe, which delivers the exhaust gases to the environment; and the turbocharger, which includes a compressor located in the intake system for compressing the air flow flowing therein, and a compressor located in the exhaust The turbine in the system that drives the compressor. [0003] To reduce polluting emissions, some internal combustion engines with turbochargers are provided with long-path exhaust gas recirculati...
