The method of performing virtual cell switching between macro base stations includes the steps: sending a first switching request to a target macro base station from a source macro base station for switching user equipment to the target macro base station; giving a response to reception of determination from the target macro base station, indicating the user equipment to switch to the target macro base station, and enabling the user equipment and a virtual cell belonging to the user equipment to maintain connection; sending a second switching request to the target macro base station from the source macro base station so as to switch the virtual cell belonging to the user equipment to the target macro base station; and giving a response to determination from the target macro base station, and indicating the virtual cell to switch to the target macro base station. The method and apparatus of performing virtual cell switching between macro base stations can realize switching of virtual cell between different macro base stations under the current standard; and as switching is performed on different levels, the method of performing virtual cell switching between macro base stations enables data transmission between the user equipment and the virtual cell not to be interrupted during the switching period so as to realize seamless switching.
