[0029] Figure 1A A device 100 according to an embodiment is shown. Device 100 may include an excitation light source 102 . Excitation light source 102 may be configured to generate excitation light 104 . Excitation light source 102 may include a laser, such as a helium-neon (HeNe) laser. Alternatively, the excitation light source 102 may be a xenon or mercury lamp, a light emitting diode, or other light source configured to excite the fluorescent properties of a fluorophore. In other words, the excitation light source 102 can generate the excitation light 104, which can in turn include light having a wavelength corresponding to the excitation wavelength of the fluorophore. Excitation light 104 may include, but is not limited to, light in a wavelength range between 380 nanometers and 1.4 micrometers.

[0030] A fluorophore can absorb light of a specific wavelength and re-emit light at a longer emission wavelength as emitted light. As described herein, a fluorophore may hav...

Abstract

In one embodiment, an apparatus and method for resecting tissue in response to determining a fluorescent state is described. The excitation light source may generate excitation light having the excitation wavelength of the fluorophore. The beam scanner can direct the excitation light to the tissue site. Fluorophores can generate emitted light in response to absorbing excitation light. The camera can take an image of the tissue location. The ablation light source may generate ablation light in response to displaying an image of the emitted light at the tissue location. The beam scanner can direct the ablation light to the tissue location. Additionally or alternatively, a topography map can be generated, and certain aspects of the apparatus and / or method can be adjusted based on the topography map.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims priority to US Patent Application No. 14 / 503,706, filed October 1, 2014, the entire contents of which are hereby incorporated by reference. Background technique [0003] Worldwide, cancer is one of the leading causes of death. Specifically, breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women and is the first or second leading cause of death depending on race. [0004] In recent years, a promising approach for real-time detection of breast cancer tumors involves the use of special markers. These markers can selectively bind to cancer cells and fluoresce (glow) when excited with the right light, providing surgeons with a real-time image of the tumor and its margins. The markers are usually in the red or near-infrared wavelength range to avoid autofluorescence of tissue in the visible range and have increased penetration depth. However, there is currently no systemic solution that allows stab...
