Embodiment Construction

[0070] refer to Figure 1 to Figure 5 , shows an IV inner catheter assembly 100 including a longitudinal axis 120 along the catheter adapter 102 (eg, Figure 5 Shown) sleeve 101 protruding from catheter adapter 102. exist Figure 1 to Figure 5 In the undeployed configuration shown, the needle 118 protrudes from the cannula 101 . The cannula 101 is preferably a flexible tube that can wrap around and be guided by the rigid needle 118 during the cannulation procedure. The needle 118 may have a tapered needle point to make an incision at the patient's vein so that the cannula 101 is inserted into the vein under the guidance of the needle 118 . The needle 118 is then withdrawn, thereby allowing the cannula 101 to exit the vein.

[0071] Catheter adapter 102 includes a body portion 130 having a lumen 122 . Port 114 extends laterally from body portion 130 and has end 116 in fluid communication with lumen 122 through one-way port valve 107 . After the needle 118 has been withdra...

Abstract

An intravenous catheter assembly comprises a catheter hub having an elongate axis and a lumen; a side port extending from the catheter hub, the side port being in fluid communication with the lumen; and a one-way port valve positioned in the side port, the one-way port valve having a valve portion formed from a resilient material. The valve portion can comprise a cap and a hinge portion about which the cap is rotatable. The cap can be disposed over an aperture formed in an inclined end face of the valve portion.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to improvements in intravenous catheter assemblies. Background technique [0002] Intravenous catheters (such as may be central or peripheral intravenous catheters) are commonly used in situations where patients require frequent or continuous injections of drugs or fluids. The cannula is inserted into the patient's vein to provide a path for the fluid to be injected. Typically, the catheter adapter from which the cannula extends may be attached to the patient's arm with adhesive. [0003] One type of intravenous (IV) catheter has a flexible sheath through which the needle passes. The tip of the needle is used to make an incision in the patient's arm where a vein is located so that the cannula can be inserted into the vein. The needle acts as a cannula that is inserted over the guide wire and is withdrawn once the cannula has been inserted. One problem that may arise during withdrawal is that due to the high friction be...
