Abstract

Methods and apparatus are disclosed for providing live adaptive bitrate (ABR) video to client devices using a multicast-to-unicast ABR proxy. The method includes, in response to a client device tuning to a channel or requesting a change in profile for a channel, requesting a burst of video segments for the channel from a distribution server using the selected profile, the burst of video segments The message is to be delivered via unicast; in response to completing the burst, requesting to join the multicast for the channel, the multicast using the selected profile; and providing the channel for the channel to the client device via unicast using the selected profile video.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure generally relates to providing live video to Adaptive Bit Rate (ABR) clients receiving video on-premises on a managed network in a more efficient manner. More specifically, without limitation, this disclosure is directed to methods and apparatus for providing ABR video using a multicast mechanism for delivery to venues. Background technique [0002] Today, IP-based live video content is delivered via two separate mechanisms, depending on the type of device and the type of network that needs to be leveraged: [0003] • Multicast video delivery is typically used on "managed" networks, ie networks managed by telecom operators. On these networks, operators can guarantee a certain quality of service (QoS), and thus can deliver video content at a fixed bit rate with very little packet loss and strong error recovery. Typical end devices are set top boxes (STB) and residential gateways (RG), but may also include content distribution ne...
