Embodiment Construction

[0034] Accurate determination of coverage enhancement (CE) requirements for wireless devices (eg, machine type communication (MTC) devices) can increase system robustness and can increase wireless device lifetime and performance. Coverage enhancement requirements may be dependent on or associated with radio link conditions of a particular device, which in turn may be associated with the device's physical location, as discussed below. Wireless systems may implement CE technology to increase the likelihood of successful communication with wireless devices. In some cases, a wireless system may support different CE levels (also referred to as coverage extension), each of which may provide a different amount of CE. For example, the system may support four CE levels - CE 0, CE 1, CE 2 and CE 3 - each corresponding to a different level of enhancement. The first CE level, CE 0, may correspond to no enhancement (e.g., 0dB), while CE 3 may correspond to considerable enhancement (e.g., ...

Abstract

A wireless device may determine a coverage enhancement (CE) level (or coverage extension) by attempting to decode received broadcast signals. A wireless device may attempt to decode a portion of the broadcast signal using a CE level that is less than the broadcast CE level. If the decoding attempt is successful, the CE level may be declared as an operational CE level. If the decoding is unsuccessful, the CE level may be increased when decoding is retried. The wireless device may continue to test decode the broadcast signal at the new (eg, increased) CE level until the CE level is sufficient for decoding and is declared the wireless device's operational CE level. In some cases, the wireless device performs test decoding on the broadcast channel after selecting the CE level based on path loss measurements of downlink signals (eg, reference signals).

Description

[0001] cross reference [0002] This patent application claims the benefit of U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 62 / 182,401, filed June 19, 2015, by Wang et al., titled "Coverage Enhancement Level Determination," and Wang et al., filed June 13, 2016, titled Priority to US Patent Application No. 15 / 180,297 for "Coverage Enhancement Level Determination," each of which has been assigned to the assignee of the present application. [0003] background technical field [0004] In general, the following description relates to wireless communications, and in particular, the following description relates to coverage enhancement (CE) level determination for machine type communication (MTC) devices. Background technique [0005] Wireless communication systems are widely deployed to provide various types of communication content such as voice, video, packet data, messaging, broadcast, and so on. These systems may be multiple-access systems capable of supporting communication with...
