example 1

[0090] Example 1: A method comprising: generating a virtual world environment within an audiovisual device; detecting at the audiovisual device a physical boundary in the real world environment in response to movement of the audiovisual device within the real world environment; in response to detecting generating an alert to said physical boundary; and suspending activities in the virtual world environment during physical reorientation of said audiovisual device within a real world environment; and upon completion of physical reorientation of said audiovisual device within a real world environment to resume activities in the virtual world at any time.

example 2

[0091] Example 2: The method of example 1, wherein generating an alert in response to detecting the physical boundary comprises displaying a virtual grid on a display of the audio-visual device, the virtual grid providing a link between the user and the detected physical boundary indication of proximity.

example 3

[0092]Example 3: The method of example 1 or 2, wherein suspending activity in the virtual world environment comprises: receiving a first command in response to the alert; and suspending activity in the virtual world environment in response to the first command Activity.

Abstract

A system and method of operating an audio visual system generating an immersive virtual experience may detect when a user approaches a physical boundary of a real world space, and may generate an alert indicating the proximity of the physical boundary. Activity in and interaction with the immersive virtual experience may be temporarily paused as the user completes a physical re-orientation in thereal world space in response to the alert. Upon detection of completion of the physical re-orientation in the real world space, activity in and interaction with the immersive virtual experience may resume at the point at which activity was temporarily paused. This may provide for relatively continuous movement in the immersive virtual experience within the boundaries of the real world space.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims priority to, and is a continuation of, U.S. Nonprovisional Patent Application No. 14 / 881,827, filed October 13, 2015, entitled "SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR PROVIDING INTERTIWEEN REVAL WORLD MOVEMENT AND MOVEMENT IN A VIRTUAL / AUGEMENTED REALITY EXPERIENCE," The disclosure thereof is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety. technical field [0003] This document as a whole deals with virtual or augmented reality systems. Background technique [0004] In immersive experiences, such as those produced by virtual reality (VR) systems or augmented reality (AR) systems, boundaries in the real world environment may affect the user's ability to fully experience the continuous virtual world environment produced by the system. Continuity in the virtual world may enhance the user's sense of presence and immersion in the virtual world when encountering real world boundaries. Existing systems and methods ...
