Embodiment Construction

[0022] Embodiments described herein relate to methods and systems for removing water from a solution having one or more osmotic solutes therein using forward osmosis (FO). FO can be used to selectively separate one or more solutes (eg, dissolved, dispersed, or suspended components of a solvent system) from one or more solvents. One or more solutes may comprise at least partially dissolved, dispersed, or suspended sugars, alcohols, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), proteins, salts, sugar alcohols, or be capable of being filtered (e.g., retained or removed) at a filter membrane via FO Other components of the liquid system, or a combination of any of the foregoing. The solutes may include osmotic solutes capable of crossing the FO membrane, such as ethanol, methanol, ethylene glycol, and the like. Solutes may include non-permeable solutes that are substantially unable to cross the FO membrane (except for negligible flux), such as sodium chloride, magnesium chloride, magnesium s...

Abstract

Embodiments described herein relate to methods and systems for dewatering alcoholic solutions via forward osmosis.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims priority to US Provisional Application No. 62 / 184,159, filed June 24, 2015, which is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety for any purpose. Background technique [0003] Existing techniques for dehydrating alcoholic solutions include thermal processes (eg distillation, evaporation) and hydrostatic pressure driven membrane processes (eg reverse osmosis, nanofiltration, ultrafiltration). Thermal processes can be detrimental to the concentration of alcoholic solutions due to high energy consumption, loss of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and modification of protein structures important for flavor, aroma and taste. Pressure-driven membrane processes can be limited by poor retention of alcohol and VOCs and hydrostatic pressure limitations. Contents of the invention [0004] The present invention discloses a method of dehydrating a solution. An example method includes introducing a fe...
