Problems solved by technology

Business intelligence applications may not be able to negotiate with the hospital's data sources to obtain relevant data
In addition, even if connections from business intelligence applications to relevant data have been previously established, updates to relevant aspects (organizational structures, equipment characteristics, medical considerations, and planning details) may inhibit the ability of these applications to access relevant data

Embodiment Construction

[0016] Business intelligence applications can be used to evaluate an operation (eg, a hospital or medical group) by using data from a number of different sources. For example, a hospital may generate large amounts of data related to different processes and in different formats. Multiple business intelligence applications select relevant data from the large volume of data to generate an analysis of the hospital's operations. In order to obtain relevant data, the identity of the data must be determined. Once the relevant data is identified, business intelligence applications can connect to or access the relevant data, which may be located in many different locations.

[0017] An example of a business intelligence application is an application that evaluates exam duration and patient variability for a CT scanner in a hospital. Analysis obtained from the business intelligence application may indicate, for example, that changes in workflow may result in shorter turnaround times a...

Abstract

A system and method for negotiating between a business intelligence application and one or more data sources. Business data from devices is received, identified and stored using a data meta model thatis updated as devices and the hospital environment change. The data meta model allows the business intelligence application to negotiate with the hospital data sources to access relevant data for evaluations. The data meta model includes an object model that is configurable, updatable, adaptable, and evolvable over time.

Description

technical field [0001] This embodiment involves integrating multiple business intelligence applications into a hospital network. Background technique [0002] Hospitals, diagnostic centers, and medical imaging centers use many types of equipment. A collection of diverse imaging or scanning devices may be used to provide services to patients and / or aid in diagnosis. A single hospital may, for example, offer x-ray examinations, computed tomography (CT) imaging, ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron emission tomography (PET) imaging, interventional radiology, and other procedures or imaging techniques. Each process may involve one or more machines, one or more imaging devices, and one or more workflows. [0003] A variety of business intelligence applications can be used to assess clinical workflow and the hospital environment in order to understand how well a hospital is running its business, performing procedures, or operating its equipment. The challenge ...
