Embodiment Construction

[0023] The present disclosure generally relates to a manufacturing process for manufacturing a multi-fiber ferrule having multiple rows of optical fibers. The process utilizes laser cutting with a certain precision to provide a final finish to the end faces of the rows of optical fibers. All end faces of the rows of fiber are aligned in one plane and are of sufficient quality that for some applications no subsequent polishing step is required. In other examples, one or more polishing operations may be used after trimming.

[0024] A fiber optic connector may include a ferrule that supports multiple optical fibers (ie, a multi-fiber ferrule corresponding to a multi-fiber connector). One example of a multi-fiber connection system is disclosed in US Patent No. 5,214,730, the disclosure of which is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety.

Abstract

The present disclosure generally relates to methods for handling optical fibers supported by multi-fiber ferrules. The method may include laser cleaving the first row of fibers and the second row of fibers by directing the laser beam in a first direction relative to the ferrule in a first fiber cleaving step. The laser beam may cut the second row of fibers into a first fiber extension length and the first row of fibers into a second fiber extension length. The method may also include laser cleaving the first row of optical fibers by directing the laser beam in a second direction relative to the multi-fiber ferrule. The laser beam cleaves the first row of fibers into the first fiber extension length and passes around the second row of fibers such that the fibers in the second row of fibers remain at the first fiber extension length.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims the benefit of US Patent Application Serial No. 62 / 257,096, filed November 18, 2015, the disclosure of which is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety. technical field [0003] The present disclosure generally relates to methods for handling components of fiber optic connectors. More specifically, the present disclosure relates to methods for handling multi-fiber ferrules used in multi-fiber fiber optic connectors. Background technique [0004] Fiber optic communication systems have grown in popularity in part because service providers want to provide high bandwidth communication capabilities (eg, data and voice) to customers. Fiber optic communication systems use fiber optic cable networks to transmit large amounts of data and voice signals over relatively long distances. Fiber optic connectors are an important part of most fiber optic communication systems. Fiber optic connectors ...
