Abstract

An apparatus for automatically retracting a harness for an animal includes a spool rotatably mounted in a housing for selectively winding and uncoiling the harness. The spool includes a hub defining an axis of rotation and gear teeth disposed about an outer surface of the hub. The gear train includes a plurality of gears that operatively engage gear teeth on the hub of the spool for rotation of the gears in the gear train. The load linkage defines a cavity for receiving a portion of the gear train for rotation of the load linkage when gears in the gear train rotate. A locking pawl in the housing is movable between a first position that allows the spool to rotate freely and a second locked position that locks the spool from rotation. A cam surface on the rotating load linkage is configured to engage the pawl for movement of the pawl to the second position. The control knob selectively positions the gear train relative to the pawl to selectively predetermine a maximum length that the strap protrudes from the housing before the locking pawl engages the spool to prevent rotation of the spool.
