The method comprises the steps: displaying an image of a first predetermined color; receiving visible light penetrating from a display screen by a color recognition sensor, and acquiring light information of light with different colors in visible light; determining whether an external object and the terminal device are getting close to each other or leaving from each other according to the light information of the light with the first predetermined color obtained by the color recognition sensor and the light information of the light with the second predetermined color, wherein the wavelength overlapping range of the light with the first predetermined color and the light with the second predetermined color is less than or equal to a preset wavelength range. In this way, the function of a distance sensor can be realized by one color recognition sensor, and the color recognition sensor can also detectthe light, so one color recognition sensor can complete the functions of the distance sensor and the ambient light sensor, thereby saving the cost of the terminal device.
