[0054] The disclosed embodiments provide structural configurations for electric vehicles. The structural arrangement includes a frame structure for housing a replaceable battery pack. The frame structure is formed into and integrated with the underframe of the vehicle. The frame structure includes a plurality of rigid interconnecting members that create a space for housing one or more replaceable battery packs. The frame structure forms a rigid skeleton configured to protect the battery pack during a crash. This configuration allows the battery pack to be a separate component from the frame structure and reduces the need for the battery pack to contain its own internal frame structure. This configuration also reduces the load carried by the connection between the battery pack and the frame structure, thereby allowing a wide variety of different connection structures to be used.

Abstract

A vehicle is disclosed having a body forming a passenger compartment. The vehicle also has an underframe supporting the body. The underframe includes a frame structure having a pair of side rails extending longitudinally along the vehicle body, a plurality of rigid cross rails extending perpendicular to the side rails and attached to the side rails at opposite ends, and At least one section defined between the plurality of cross rails. The vehicle also has a battery system including a battery pack. The battery pack has a plurality of electrical storage devices. The battery pack is secured to the side rails and is removably positioned in at least one compartment.
