Abstract

Systems, methods, and computer-readable storage media for publishing, discovering, connecting, and activating services in a peer-to-peer environment are provided. Available services associated with the first computing device are determined and encoded with instructions for accessing and understanding those services via their corresponding activation protocols. The encoded services are published via the publishing protocol such that they are discoverable by at least a second computing device, regardless of whether the services can be activated via the publishing protocol. The second computing device discovers available services via the publishing protocol, and accesses and understands instructions associated with the desired services. Upon receiving a request to activate the requested service from the second computing device via the activation protocol, the requested service is activated by the first computing device.
