Problems solved by technology

Unfortunately, automated vehicles may not be able to predict the dynamics of vehicles ahead in intersections
This unpredictability of how long a vehicle ahead may be in the intersection may result in the host vehicle unintentionally blocking traffic while the host vehicle is still in the intersection when the right of way is changed by a traffic light

Embodiment Construction

[0012] figure 1 A non-limiting example of a host vehicle 20 is shown that includes a traffic jam avoidance system 22 operating in an intersection 24 , which may be a road intersection. Host vehicle 20 may be an automated vehicle including semi-autonomous operation and autonomous (ie, fully automated) operation. As part of a fully automated vehicle, the system 22 can operate without input from an occupant or operator 28 located within the host vehicle 20 (see Figure 4 ) to control the speed, direction (e.g., steering), braking, and other aspects of the host vehicle 20 required to drive the host vehicle 20 in each lane of the intersection 26A, 26B and maneuver through the intersection 24 without interaction of the operation.

[0013] For simplicity of illustration, roads 26A, 26B and intersection 24 will be described with respect to north, south, west, and east coordinates as a non-limiting example. The road 26A includes a north (N)-bound lane 30N and a south (S)-bound lane ...

Abstract

The invention discloses a traffic blocking avoidance system for an automated vehicle. A system (22) for semi-autonomous or autonomous operation of a host vehicle (20) includes an intersection locationdata (84), at least one detector (56), and a controller (60). The intersection location data (84) is associated with a roadway intersection (24). The at least one detector (56) is configured to output a vehicle signal (82) indicative of a location of a leading vehicle (34). The controller (60) is configured to receive the vehicle signal (82) and associate the vehicle signal (82) relative to the intersection location data (84) to prevent the host vehicle (20) from entering the roadway intersection (24) until the leading vehicle (34) has at least traveled beyond the roadway intersection (24).

Description

Background technique [0001] The present disclosure relates to automated vehicles, and more particularly to traffic jam avoidance systems for automated vehicles. [0002] The operation of modern vehicles is becoming more and more autonomous, which allows for less driver intervention. This control feature of modern vehicles can help the vehicle navigate through intersections that can be controlled by traffic lights that provide intermittent right-of-way and yield commands. Unfortunately, automated vehicles may not be able to predict the dynamics of vehicles ahead in intersections. This unpredictability of how long a vehicle ahead may be within the intersection may result in the host vehicle unintentionally blocking traffic while the host vehicle is still within the intersection when the right of way is changed by a traffic signal. Contents of the invention [0003] In one non-limiting exemplary embodiment of the present disclosure, a system for semi-autonomous or autonomous ...
